This is a real beach that is located just north of Malibu. It became my favorite spot one summer when I came out to visit my dad. The first time I went there it was at night and I was with my dad, brother and stepmother. It was odd to me at first that we were going later but I found out soon that it was because we were going to see the red tide. The red tide is when a bioluminescent algae “blooms” during the summer. There was a bit of a hike down to the beach and then I remember seeing these huge rocks in the water that had caves carved into them by the water. The first thing I noticed was that as I stepped in the sand, there would be sparks that would radiate from each step. It was the coolest thing I had ever seen, until I looked out into the water. The waves were glowing this beautiful blue-green color. As they crashed down you could see the sparks as well and the color radiate out from where the waves would break. To this day it is one of the most magical things that I have ever seen. El Matador will always be that magical place for me and it’s a place I go to when I need to feel grounded or be at peace. Catching the sunset is amazing. I hope everyone can have a special place like this to retreat to when needed.
